Quick Writes #1

Considering that it’s the holidays and my school books haven’t arrived, I figured that I would make good on my promise and practice writing. Fortunately it doesn’t feel like a chore like it used to back then, so it feels refreshing to do. I’ve also decided to always post something here on even days, so just a heads up 🙂

Now you’re probably wondering, “Well how are you going to practice writing?” I’ve mentioned that I want to write based off prompts I find. A few months ago I followed an Instagram account that provides unique writing prompts so I decided to try it out and see if it works out (?).

Another personal goal I’ll add is that my writings have to reach a certain word count. Since this is my first shot and I’m pretty rusty, I settled on 400 words first. Here we go 😉

“Wake up, Brad. We’ve got a problem.”

” What do you want now?” Stupid bear.

“Dan’s missing.”

4 eyes shot open. Brad sat up at once, hitting his head on the bed base supporting Dan’s mattress. Poking his head out from under the bed, he could tell that it was the middle of the night.

“Get up, Brad. This is urgent.” The tiny bear jumped off the bed to face the monster, not daring to look him directly in the eyes. Those blazing red eyes.

“You were on night watch duty, what do you mean ‘missing’ ?” Brad glanced at the bed. Maybe the bear went blind. Unmade sheets were the only sign that there was a boy currently residing in the room. As for the boy…

Now that the beast was standing upright, claws glinting in the moonlight, the top of his head mere centimeters from the ceiling, Fluffles swallowed. He was not planning to die today. He was sure one slash from those claws would end him. Or maybe Brad liked to tear apart those who crossed him, who would know.

“Yeah, about that,” Fluffles tried to conceal his sheepish grin. “I may have taken a small tiny nap.”

Fluffles had to scurry away to the safety of the toy box to avoid the swift swipe of sharp silver aimed at him. “He’s only 7, Brad. Maybe put your anger aside until we find him?” If Fluffles had fingers, they would have been desperately crossed.

Retracting his claws, Brad sighed deeply. He had taken all the necessary measures to ensure Dan’s safety and yet this happens. The monster was itching to un-stuff the teddy.

“Fine, fine. We’re leaving. Let’s go find him,” he grabbed Dan’s Spiderman backpack and haphazardly threw stuff in.

Fluffles could not help but stare incredulously. “Go outside?”

“No, to bed. Of course outside,” Brad grabbed the bear by the ear and flung him into the bag. Fluffles’ head emerged, confused.

“You can’t be seen outside, look at you!” Fluffles did not know what was crazier: Brad or this situation.

“I’m not dumb. Hold on a sec.”

Brad reached for the pendant around his neck. Steeling himself, he pressed the ruby gem. Black scales became skin, claws vanished, 4 eyes turned into 2. He stared at the mirror wistfully. He already missed the claws he could threaten Fluffles with. The young face of a child looking back at him could never be compared to his true form.

Fluffles was still in shock as Brad slung Dan’s backpack over his shoulder. “What the f-“

“Shut up, here’s the plan. We’re going to look for Dan tonight. If we don’t find him by morning, you’re screwed. He gets hurt, you’re screwed. Someone tries to stab me in the back and you don’t warn me, you’re screwed. You get me?”

“Ah yes,” Fluffles giggled nervously as the Brad-human climbed onto the windowsill, ready to leap. Oh Dan, I hope you’re okay.

“Okay, hang on tight.”

And that’s all for today :p till the 20th (today marks 1 week to Christmas !!)
